Born in Immenstadt on 19 February 1805, the merchant Fidel Schlund was one of the central figures of the freedom movement in Bavarian Swabia during the revolution of 1848/1849.

He resolutely stood up for the sovereignty of the people, the unity of Germany and the unconditional validity of fundamental rights and thus for the principles of our present constitution.

After the violent suppression of the revolution, his longing for freedom led him to emigrate to the USA, where he once again became socially and politically active.

As a member of the Republican Party under President A. Lincoln and in the American Civil War, he fought for the abolition of slavery. Fidel Schlund was a respected citizen in the USA who died on 2 April 1882 in Newark, New Jersey.
